At the Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir, our doors are open to everyone, regardless of your background, faith, or experience. We are a diverse family united by a love for harmony and a shared spirit of joy.
While we welcome all walks of life, our heart is firmly rooted in the Gospel tradition. From the timeless beauty of hymns like Precious Lord to the powerful contemporary sounds of Richard Smallwood and Kirk Franklin, we celebrate the rich history and energy of Gospel music in every rehearsal.

We rehearse every Tuesday evening from 7.00pm until 8.30pm.

To help us cover our rehearsal space and running costs, we ask for a contribution of £3.00 per session.
You are more than welcome to join us for two taster sessions for free to see if the choir is the right fit for you. Once you decide to stay, we encourage members to set up a monthly direct debit of £12 to keep our administration simple and let us focus on the music!
When you’re ready to join the family, we’ll provide you with a welcome pack. As a non-profit run by volunteers, we want our doors to be open to everyone. If the cost is a barrier for you, please have a quiet word with one of our team. We believe everyone should have the chance to sing.
Led by director Edwin Baker, the choir benefits from over five decades of musical heritage. Edwin grew up immersed in the Gospel tradition, and he brings that lifetime of experience and passion to HCGC, ensuring our music remains true to its soulful foundations.
Edwin Baker is the Founder and Musical Director of Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir. Since establishing the choir in 2010, Edwin has been the driving force behind its growth from a local workshop series into a powerhouse of harmony and inclusion. With a deep-rooted passion for the life-affirming power of gospel music, he is dedicated to bringing diverse communities together through song.
We sing in three-part harmony: Soprano, Alto, and Tenor.
Don’t worry if you aren’t sure where your voice sits yet! We invite all new members to spend their first few sessions “finding their voice.” You are more than welcome to move between sections until you find the one that feels most comfortable and natural for your range.
- Sopranos: Usually for those with higher singing voices.
- Altos: Great for those who prefer the middle range.
- Tenors: Generally for lower voices (including our male singers, but we do have some female tenors too).
Our director, Edwin, and the rest of the team are always happy to help guide you if you’re stuck!
See you there?
We hope to see you down at Huddersfield Mission.
